Any parent who has teenagers gets this. What parent didn't have a moment where they thought of pulling out their hair? Teens grow up and sometimes you are amazed how they do it, because you weren't sure it was going to work out the right way.
Vincent "Sweat Pea" Burns was one of those teenagers. Blessed is a word this 32-year-old often uses.
"You never know when your career is going to end," says Sweet Pea. "I was very blessed to come back to UK. They helped me finish, paying for my school, and I got my degree in 2008. I look forward to telling kids 'finish your degree before moving on to the next step in life'."
Sweet Pea was a two-time SEC defensive lineman. Too small? So what? The team that went after small lineman, the Colts, took him in the third round of 2005. His knees gave out. Healthy knees and he's probably still playing with a fat bank account.
"I'm married to a beautiful woman named Samantha. She is the best thing that happened to me in the last three years. [She's been] putting up with me, and I can't ask for anything better than my life with her and my kids," Sweet pea said. "I have four beautiful girls."
When "Sweet Pea" was at Kentucky, he admits to not paying attention to education enough. He came back and became the first in his family to get his degree.
"If I had that chance to do it all over again, I would pay attention a lot more to school. I really would," he said.
Football was everything, but Sweet Pea is no longer lost.
