The results so far are not positive. Cal has no problem admitting that what's happening. His bench needs a lot of work.
"It's not working right now," says Cal about the four workouts he's put Eloy Vargas, Stacey Poole, Jon Hood and Jarrod Polson through.
"My whole mindset is Stacy and Jon Hood and Eloy are going to help us before the season is over. And that's my, it's on. It's on. That's how I'm looking at it."
I've had many players who had Rupp as a coach tell me that the games were easy. Practices were so tough, that the games were fun. I've had players under Pitino tell me the same thing. Cal believes in the old school theory.
"Look, if you can't take me, how are you going into a high level game that's on national television and make a tough play. You can't take me? And that's why guys that can take me when I get on them, and they respond to that, they are not phased in the game."
In the first workout, somebody threw up.
"One of them, and I won't tell you which one, after 15 minutes threw up, says UK's coach."
UK for the first time this year, let the media into their locker room. Normally, we are allowed to talk to 3 or 4 players. Rarely, is it someone who doesn't play a lot. There is no way Sherlock Holmes could have come to the bottom of this without UK letting us in.
"I'm not going to tell you all that, but it wasn't me," says a smiling Jon Hood. "That's 100%, it was not me. I did not."
Sherlock Holmes: We are going to narrow it down, you do realize it.
"I know you are, but it wasn't me," says Hood.
Sherlock Holmes: Eloy?
"No, it wasn't Eloy. I'm not going to answer."
Sherlock Holmes: Was it Stacey?
"It was either Stacey or Jared."
Sherlock wasn't getting any more out of Jon Hood, so it was off to Eloy Vargas.
Sherlock Holmes: Are you the one who lost it the other day in the workouts?
"Right here," says a smiling Eloy Vargas who was pointing at his roommate Stacey Poole. "That was him."
Sherlock Holmes: It was Stacey not you?
"That was him," Vargas said again.
When Sherlock Holmes went to talk to Stacey, he was ready.
"When you are pushing yourself like that and you are working hard, it just came up," says Poole. "And it felt pretty good when it got out of my system.
Sherlock wanted to know if Vargas' game was going to get better because of Cal's workouts.
"Oh yeah," says Vargas. "I'm feeling quicker and a lot more balanced now."
Which is what Cal wants, more balance between his starters and what he hopes will be his bench. But, in 20 minutes against Auburn, the four players combined did not score.
