Cal might not be happy with how hard Alex Poythress is playing, but the 6-foot-7, 239-pound freshman forward from Clarksville, Tenn., was named SEC Freshman of the Week after averaging 21.0 points and 6.5 rebounds in games against 9th-ranked Duke and Lafayette.
Poythress had 20 points and a team-high eight rebounds in a loss to Duke. He then topped that performance with a 9-10 night from the field for a career-high 22 points. He became the first freshman since Brandon Knight in Feb. 2011 to have consecutive 20-point efforts.
Alabama's Trevor Releford, a 6-foot, 195-pound sophomore guard from Kansas City, Mo., was named SEC Player of the Week after scoring averaging 18.0 points, 3.0 assists and 1.5 steals in leading the Crimson Tide to the 2K Sports Classic championship with wins over Oregon State and Villanova.
Releford was selected as the Most Outstanding Player of the event.
