To say the least, Morgan Newton was disappointed when he learned that Mike Hartline had gotten the starting job.
The UK quarterback doesn't feel any differently today. Don't get him wrong, he's very happy the Cats are 2-0 and that Hartline has been impressive, but Newton believes he could have done the same thing.
"I'm not going to lie, it was tough. I'm a competitor. I pride myself on being a competitor but with that said, these are the cards I was dealt," said Newton.
Newton played some in the second half of the Western Kentucky game. He rushed for a net gain of three yards and he completed both of his pass attempts for 48 yards.
"It felt pretty good. I kind of forgot how to play in a game situation from last year, but it felt good to get some reps and be successful and make a couple plays and I was excited about it," said the UK quarterback. Then added with a smile, " If i'm in then it means good things are happening."
This fall hasn't been easy on the talented star from just outside Indianapolis. His freshman season, Newton took over when Hartline went down and lead the Cats to two tough SEC road wins at Auburn and Georgia. Many fans believed the Newton era had begun. There were times he thought that too.
"I've had some success. It's tough. Patience is the right thing to say. You just try to be patient and you just try to make the best out of what you've got."
Newton not getting the starting the role has made some true blue fans wonder if he's thought about transferring. He says those thoughts haven't entered his head just yet.
"I'm here six, seven, eight hours a day so I don't know. I don't plan on doing anything drastic or crazy, I'm just trying to get better."
