Joker's Trying To Be Proactive On Agent Situation

It's not been a great few weeks if you look at what has gone on in the SEC east.

Vanderbilt had to look for a new coach after the sudden retirement of Bobby Johnson, and Florida, Georgia and South Carolina are all dealing with potential problems and violations because of agents and their players.

Fortunately, Kentucky has not been involved in anything like that.

At SEC media days in Birmingham, the topic of agents was a hot one.

Alabama coach Nick Saban even likened them to pimps, saying agents were no better.

"That's not good news for our conference," said UK receiver Randall Cobb.

"We're still a part of this SEC conference and we don't want to hear any bad things about other teams because we're pushing for those teams whenever they're playing out of conference games."

UK head coach Joker Phillips says his best shot at not getting involved in any of this mess is by trying to be proactive.

"One of the things we try to do is just educate our players. We've already had discussions with our players and we try to tell our players that and try to get our young players to police it too because they're the ones it will hurt the most because if something should happen, they'll be the ones who won't be able to go to bowl games and won't be able to be on TV. We've educated our older players like we have every year and we just hope that nothing happens on our end," Phillips said.

It's tough to place blame solely on the agents since most schools do try to inform players of situations that can get them or their school in trouble.

But Cobb may have said it best.

"Maybe we as players don't get as much education about it as we should, but I do know this, we know the difference between right and wrong."
