Does John Calipari have the best player in America on his team?
He thinks so.
Terrence Jones was the preseason pick for the SEC player of the year, but Calipari has even higher expectations than that for the sophomore. With a great cast around him, it might be hard for the Terrence Jones of last season to shine. But he's worked so hard this offseason, the Cal doesn't believe anyone can compare to him.
"If there's a better player in the country, I've got to see him," said Calipari. "Maybe that guy's in our gym, I don't know. But if there is somebody better than Terrence, I've got to see."
Jones came to Kentucky possessing a ton of talent and all the skills he needed to be a great college player. When he made the decision to forego the NBA draft and return to college, he knew that wasn't going to be enough. Terrence has done the little things that he hopes, and Cal believes, will make him not just a great college player, but a dominant one.
"First in all the running things, first out on the court, comes back in the evening and shoots. I had four scouts in here yesterday that said his focus on basketball and what he is compared to last year is not even close," said Calipari.
That focus, in part, comes from losing in the Final Four. If Terrence is as improved as his coach says, the Cats might not stop there this year.
