The term string music was created for what UK did in the first half against Winthrop. Time after time they were hitting from everywhere. Doron Lamb couldn't miss. Knight was almost perfect.
"Just feeling it," says Knight. "That's when you know the basket is wide open. Anything you put up you know is going in. Keep shooting it.
It's the big equilizer. It's pretty simple. You keep shooting like this,71% from downtown in the first half, no one is going to beat you.
But, as hot as the cats were, if it were a normal shooting game, there would have been no blowout after 20 minutes. Take it one step further, if the Cats were shooting lights out, it still would have been a game.
"If we shot 50% from the three point line, this would be like an eight point game," says Cal.
"You do understand. You are 7 out of 14 instead of 10 out of 14 which is ridiculous. Now it's a ten point game."
This is the key. Knight sees it happening.
"We are becoming more comfortable with each other. We are starting to click a lot more with each other," says UK's point guard.
"Like you said, things are just starting to happen, a lot of runs we get where guys are wide open, knocking down open shots, getting deflections, leading to dunks and stuff like that.
For a while, Knight, who is by far the smartest Cat was thinking. It wasn't natural. There will come a point and time this year when he is just reacting. When that happens, and it will, UK is a different team.
"I think I am reacting a lot more. So is everyone else."
Cal has said many times that this team has to learn how to win on a night when the ball isn't going in. It's going to happen. That could end up being a key to the season because when it's going in, and this is a team that can shoot, UK is dangerous.
