Pressure can do funny things to athletes. Cal is doing his best to take pressure off his team. Do the best you can against Kansas Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden. If it's not good enough, don't worry about it. It's a long season. UK will just move on and get ready for Penn State, the next game.
True Blue fans don't think like that, but Cal is trying to help the players who will be nervous.
"So if we are in a close game and stuff doesn't go right, don't look at my players, it's me." says Cal. "We just haven't had time. It's the middle of November. So let's hope it's not a one point game and someone has the ball late. "
Nothing like using a little psychology. Cal is trying to put it all on himself.
The strategy he is using on Anthony Davis is totally different.
The SEC Freshman of the week for his 23 points on 10 of 13 shooting, 10 rebounds and 5 blocks against Marist was all-world to most. Not to Cal. He's pounding him.
Cal wouldn't be tough on Anthony Davis if he couldn't handle it. Cal believes Davis who wants to be great, has to be if UK is going to win big.
"The film session we had Saturday I was all over him."
Cal surprised Davis.
"And I'm like I'm not worried about Marist. I'm worried about North Carolina. I'm worried about Kansas. I'm worried about Louisville. You can't play that way and us win."
That's putting a lot of Davis' shoulders. But, that's what Cal thinks is the best way to win the NCAA Championship.
