You can't stay the same. Joker Phillips admits that there is one word he's learned to use more than ever before, "no."
To be successful after moving up from being number two to the Boss, you have to adjust to things that stay within your personality. UK's players have seen the change in their new head coach.
"He has that boss mentality," says UK defensive end DeQuin Evans.
"He don't take too much now. There is no holds barred."
Evans believes that Joker is tougher than Rich Brooks, who he thought was tough.
"You miss a class you are paying for it. There is no excuses that are going to get you out of class. You miss a tudor you are paying for it. You miss a workout you are paying for it. There are no excuses. He is not going for none of that."
Evans is happy that Kentucky asked him to help represent them in the SEC media days. He even has a special suit picked out. And he is prepared for all kind of questions like this, is it special, do you feel some pride that he is now playing for an African-American head coach.
"I do. I feel like more than anything, not just because he is African American is that he is bringing in a lot of people who will help us win games. He is bringing in a whole new coaching staff which is helping us get physically and mentally stronger and tougher which is going to have us ready for Saturday and game days."
After talking to LEX 18, Evans was going to call his mother. LEX 18 told him that he just made the Coaches second team preseason All-SEC team.
"Oh man, that's a beautiful thing."
